Cuixmala and Hacienda de San Antonio, the Mexican ecoLuxury

We are happy to present our new members of the ecoLuxury Retreats of the World: Cuixmala and Hacienda de San Antonio. These two sister properties in Mexico have recently joined us after passing the ecoLuxury Compliance Audit.

Cuixmala is set in lush vegetation on a 3 km, golden sand beach on the Mexican Pacific coast. The estate
is a stunning 25,000 acres of land, lagoons, and beaches, while Hacienda de San Antonio is set in the midst of magnificent landscaped grounds at the foot of the majestic Volcan de Fuego, the 19th century hacienda is tucked away in the highlands of western Mexico.

The Cuixmala Ecological Foundation (FECx) is a non goveramental organization established on May 1988 and was instrumental in establishing the vast Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere Reserve, the first reserve of its kind in Mexico to protect this type of ecosystem and the fourth most important in terms of biodiversity. The Foundation has supported a variety of projects, ranging from habitat conservation (forest and wetlands), threatened species (marine turtles, crocodiles, jaguars, pumas, parrots), and through the application of organic agriculture and forestry plantations as alternatives for sustainable use.

The Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere Reserve is the first in Mexico to preserve tropical dry forest, in an official
manner. The reserve has a protected area of 131.42 square kilometers and is dominated by a hilly topography. The reserve maintains high species diversity, one of the largest concentrations of endemic species in the country. The Reserve protects a combination of habitats, including 1200 species of plant, 270 of birds, 70 of mammals, 68 of reptiles, 19 of amphibians and many thousands of species of insects and other invertebrates.

Many years ago Cuixmala began a highly successful marine turtle protection program. The giant sea turtles return each year to lay their eggs on the Playa Cuixmala where the eggs are gathered by staff to protect them from predators and poachers. Once the baby turtles hatch from the eggs they are returned to the sea. Guests at Cuixmala are able to view and participate in this very rewarding program.

What else to say? These two properties really represent the ecoLuxury style: Eco Excellence & Unique Experiences.
